When it comes to feeding your baby or child, yogurt can be a great option. It is packed with fat, protein, calcium and other nutrients and can help support growth and development. But with so many different types of yogurt on the market, how do you know which one is right for your little one? We’re breaking down yogurt for babies and children along with tips for finding the right one.

If you’re looking for a dairy-based yogurt:

  1. Don’t feel pressured to get a baby or child a specific, branded yogurt. It’s typically more expensive and many times has added sugars.
  2. Look for whole fat yogurts for your child through at least the age of 5.  Fat is crucial for brain development, and many kids will continue to benefit from the added fat throughout childhood.
  3. Look for a yogurt that has no sugar added. You’re always better off adding your own fruit to sweeten yogurt. Plus, it’s really good for kids to be exposed to tart flavors since those can take some getting used to.
  4. Use a food pouch to easily add flavor to your yogurt. We love Once Upon A Farm.
  5. Remember, dairy is a very personal preference and what may work for one family doesn’t work for the other. If dairy isn’t something used in your house, don’t worry, there are a lot of other ways to get fat and calcium. Check out our Guide to Milk in freebies for all the details on milk and non-dairy alternatives and helping your kid get the nutrient they need.

Brands we love (and if it’s within your budget, go for an organic option):

Non-Dairy Yogurt

Our Favorite Mix-Ins

  • Chia Seed Pudding
  • Blended freeze dried strawberries (or any fruit), which turns into a powder to easily add flavor
  • Once Upon a Farm (or any food pouch of your choice)
