DIY Post-Birth Recovery from our Doula Lori Bregman

We learned from our amazing doula, Lori Bregman, that planning for the fourth trimester is one of the best ways we can prepare to take care of ourselves after birth. In the weeks and days leading up to my birth with Luca, Lori helped me prepare items to set my body and mind up for success after birth. I loved these items so much and had to share these natural after birth healing recipes with you! As always, make sure you consult your physician before use.

Here’s a link to our shop with all the ingredients needed.

Lori’s Postbirth Sitz Bath: for post-birth, sitz baths are an amazing way to heal your perineum (and hemorrhoids).

What you need:

Directions:

  1. Mix together salt, lavender flowers, calendula leaves, comfrey leaves for make bath mixture.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of bath mixture and 1/4 cup witch hazel to warm bath water. Stir with the water and soak for a maximum of 10-20 minutes per day after birth for post birth healing

Lori’s Postbirth Healing Pads: one batch of these make a lot and are the perfect item to have waiting for you at home after birth! The ingredients help with inflammation, swelling, and pain to promote healing.

What you need:

Directions:

  1. Dilute the witch hazel with water in a mason jar with a lid or any jar with a lid. Just make sure it’s a designated jar for your healing pads as it cannot be used for food preparation or storage afterward as comfrey root should not be ingested.
  2. Add the liquid comfrey root and liquid vitamin E to the mixture.
  3. Secure the lid and mix well.
  4. Coat the surface of each pad with a thin layer of the mixture.
  5. Wrap up each pad in plastic wrap and store them laying flat in the freezer.
  6. After delivery, place a frozen pad in your underwear for up to 10 minutes. Use 1-2 per day.
  7. You can also use any leftover mixture in a spray bottle for additional relief after going to the bathroom or showering.
