Tips for Taking Newborn Photos
If you’re a parent-to-be, congratulations! One of the most exciting things about welcoming a new baby is capturing all of those precious moments with photos. While it may seem daunting at first, newborn photography can be a lot of fun – and the results are absolutely priceless.
Timing is everything when getting newborns to cooperate, try to schedule the shoot for a time of the day where they seem to be the most calm. Make sure they’re full and content before you take their picture.
Keep the room warm. Newborns like warmth so a warm room can keep them calmer and more comfortable especially when they are in a diaper or have less clothing on.
Schedule the shoot at 1-3 weeks old, that way you have some time to get in your groove before the shoot.
Keep an eye on the lighting in order to get a good shot. Check your surroundings and try different angles, backgrounds or poses. Make sure there’s enough natural light coming into the room so it can be captured on film without being too bright.
Get organized before the photoshoot. This means getting all your props, blankets, clothes, hats, and anything else you may need ready before the baby arrives. You don’t want to be running around looking for things during the session.
Choose neutral colors for clothing and props. Bright colors can be overwhelming in photos and tend to distract from the baby. Stick with light shades or neutrals for a softer shot.
Have backup entertainment behind the camera for older siblings. From funny faces to Mickey Mouse, pull out all the stops to keep toddlers entertained.
